235,000 visitors came to Berlin-Schönefeld

ILA 2010 Berlin-Schönefeld

The International Aerospace Exhibition & Berlin Airshow ILA confirmed it´s value as a business platform even more convincingly than before and was presented to the professionals and the general public as a hi-tech sector that is classed among the key technologies of the 21st century. With the largest participation in the 100-year history of the ILA, the 1,153 exhibitors from 47 countries presented an impressive range of products and services from every area of the aerospace industry. Approximately 235,000 visitors (2008: 241,000) attended the fair. Contracts and business agreements with a total value of at least 16.5 billion dollars were signed during the air show. The biggest single order was from the airline Emirates, which agreed to purchase 32 Airbus A380 aircraft at a total list price of some 11.5 billion dollars. Airbus alone sold 67 aircraft during the ILA 2010.
Just under 300 aircraft were on display on the ground and in the air. Aircraft making their world or ILA debuts included the new A400M military transporter, the CH-53GA (German Advanced) transport helicopter, which is equipped with the latest avionics, and the DLR-H2 Antares, the world’s first manned aircraft that uses a fuel cell system to eliminate all CO2 emissions.
Unfortunaly the airshow was strong restricted and affected by Germany’s strict safety regulations and the regular civilian airtraffic.

New leader for Patrouille Suisse
This year Switzerland was the partner country of the ILA and once again the Patrouille Suisse was paying it´s regular visit as one of the stars of the flying displays at the Berlin Air Show. The six Northrop F-5E Tiger II jets presented a breathtaking display. Sadly some of the more spectacular manoeuvres have been toned down to comply with Germany’s strict safety regulations. What a shame! The new manoeuvre for the 2010 season is called Simon Ammann inspired by the successful ski jumping champion. The Patrouille has a new leader this year, Captain Daniel Siegenthaler having departed after fulfilling this role for many years. His place in the cockpit of “Tiger Uno” has been taken by Captain Marc Zimmerli, known as ”Zimi”. He has been a member of the Patrouille since 2004 and has been replaced as the team's first solo pilot by Captain Simon Billeter. A new member of the team this season is First Lieutenant Gunnar Jansen in “Tiger Tre”. The show of the PS again was still amazing.

Conclusion

Very strong restriction by Germany’s safety regulations and long breaks caused by the regular civilian traffic operating at Berlin Schönefeld were very unhelpfully factors for an airshow.
F-22, A400, Sukhoi Superjet 100, 787 - all were flying, but at Farnborough. Farnborough clearly reached the number one position in Europe.
The ILA 2010 airshow and especially fair trade was very disappointing, no reason to join the ILA in 2012.
